How do you find the perfect family dog?
Have you ever wondered how to find the perfect family dog, especially when you have young children? There is so much to consider. You want a social, friendly, fun dog. You also want a well mannered dog that is a nuisance and is kind and gentle with your children and their friends. And of course, you certainly don’t want a reactive dog, a scared dog, or an aggressive one that could be a danger or a liability!
There are simple guidelines you can follow that will help your selection of a perfect family dog. Consider the following professional tips, as you meet potential furry dog additions to your family.
Consider the breed. If you’re looking for an energetic breed, keep in mind that the energy doesn’t go away just because it’s an inconvenient time! A bouncy vizsla or pitty mix may knock over very small children, even with the best doggy intentions. Or a herding breed, will react with their mouth and teeth when over stimulated and excited - often not out of aggression at all!
Think about how you want the dog to behave when you AREN’T interacting with it, and look for that in a dog! Realistically, we can’t give 100% of our attention to our dogs, and especially not if you have a family and children also demanding and requiring your attention! So pick the dog that is comfortable hanging out on their own. Pick the dog that is capable of chilling out when everyone else is busy doing their own thing. Pick the dog that is happy to just be near you, and doesn’t need to bug you for attention or an activity.
Match your energy level! If your family is more into cozy movie nights on the couch together, don’t choose a dog in hopes that they will change your entire lifestyle to a more active one! If you’re a weekend warrior kind of family, that’s great. Choose a dog that’s got the same desires and temperament to be a weekend warrior too. Be realistic about your family energy level and demands.
Finally - this is hopefully a no brainer. Consult a trainer! Yes, even prior to getting your new family dog, chat with a trainer! They may be able to point you in the right direction of the right dog. Perhaps one they personally know or worked with and think is a great fit, or just a great breeder they have experience with and think highly of. Letting a professional get to know your needs and helping to point you in the right direction with some guidance is often the first step to immeasurable success!
